Republicans Refuse To Compromise On Debt Talks

(What an asshole!

“The debt ceiling won’t pass with the tax hikes included!” -John Boehner

And here I was told that Democrats never listen to the people? What about the GOP?)

Obama invites top senators for debt talks

WASHINGTON – The White House says President Barack Obama is stepping directly into stalled debt talks, inviting Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican leader Mitch McConnell separately to discussions Monday.

The White House meetings, announced Friday by press secretary Jay Carney, would seek to pick up where stalled negotiations headed by Vice President Joe Biden left off. Republican negotiators abandoned those talks Thursday over Democrats’ insistence on including tax increases in any deficit-reduction plan.

McConnell has been insisting that Obama become personally involved in the budget discussions.

Congressional Republicans want an agreement on about $2 trillion in spending cuts over 10 years before agreeing to raise the nation’s borrowing limit, currently capped at $14.3 trillion.

Comments from the article:

This is, regrettably, an established track record for the Republicans in Congress. To them, “compromise” means, “you concede everything we want, and we don’t concede anything.”

I don’t like everything I see the Democrats in Congress doing. But at least the Democrats made concessions to some pretty hefty spending cuts. Now let’s see the Republicans make some concessions too.

This isn’t about political ideology, it’s about getting the job done. Compromise requires BOTH sides to give a little. If the Republicans refuse to budge, they will end up paying the price.

The problem is – if we do go into default because the deficit limit cap isn’t raised, then it won’t be the Congressional members who pay the price (not until election season, anyway). It will be the American middle class that pays the price.

It doesn’t matter whether you are Democratic or Republican – fair is fair. BOTH SIDES HAVE TO COMPROMISE. The Democrats have made concessions. Now it’s the Republicans’ turn.
